When’s the Last Time You…
February 4, 2010  |  Hmmmm

I have been a vocal opponent of the iPhone since it came out.

I’ve been a Blackberry girl since before you were born.

I swore I’d never get an iPhone.

Ever.

Then a friend gave me one.

Free.

So…I tried it for a few months, and we didn’t like each other.

And AT&T…well, as they say – there’s a map for that.

I broke my contract (rejoicing!) and moved over to Sprint.

The iPhone went to South Africa

I got a Palm Pre.

And, I didn’t like it.

The battery lasted 45 seconds.

So, taking advantage of the 30-day swap policy, I went back to a Blackberry.

And then I got another Blackberry, because only one (the Tour) is capable of going out of the country.

YET…

Evidently, I needed to have Sprint service for a year before they would activate my international option.

And you see, I’m going to Haiti next week, and Moldova and Russia in April.

(I need international service now!)

After trying everything we could (my hubs even manages a Sprint store)…they said they’d discount my early termination fee, but they just couldn’t switch on my international service.

So I called AT&T and asked to come back. They were great. They waived fees, and gave me a credit.

But when it came down to it, I had to choose…

The iPhone, or a Blackberry.

I’m a sell out.

I chose the iPhone.

BUT…AT&T also has a 30-day swap program, so…if the iPhone and I are incompatible again, I will be getting another Blackberry.

(Hear me roar.)

But for now…

I have received so many text messages from friends who have called me out on my iPhone bashing.

Laughing at me.

Calling me names.

Laughing at me more.

Just now, as I write this blog, I got a text saying, “You cracked! I love it!!”

Humble pie.

When’s the last time you ate it?

What flavor?

  1. I eat it everyday, my little sister is really good at serving i up.

  2. Welcome back to the dark side!!!
P.S. Humble pie is best served with a side of crow!

  3. Droid/Google Phone > iPhone, hands down… but unfortunately Verizon is #fail in Haiti. But alas, we’ve already been through that. I’m still just moping.

    Doh!

    Funny story though ;)

  6. I love my iPhone! A few of my favorite apps are:
    Shopper (MyShopperApp.com)
    Holy Bible (YouVersion)
    AroundMe (Tweakersoft)

  7. I had a BB Pearl and lambasted the iPhone when it first came out. I said that the cost outweighed its usefulness, and that the money could go somewhere else and do more good. But I hated my Pearl and I was given the opportunity to switch from T-Mobile to AT&T (where I could talk to all my friends for free). So I did. Call me a sell out, but I’ve loved that stupid iPhone ever since.

And maybe it proved useful after all. I used it pull up a photo of a missing friend, found guys who knew him using it, and then took down addresses and phone numbers all at the same time. We tracked the guy down in less than 5 hours. Got him home with his parents and for a few weeks anyway, he was clean.

I couldn’t have done that with my Pearl. Tracking down a 20 year old potential fugitive? There’s an app for that.

  9. All week, lots of pie. I’m a pastor and I feel I work very hard. I minister in a very poor, urban setting. Our faith community is made up of mostly addicts (some recovering), homeless, poor and the very poor. And one, yes one, middle class banker. I pray for, minister to, and council this beautiful mess with all my heart… and then this week my older brother, who I look up to like a little brother does, attempted suicide. My mom and other siblings leaned into me as their pastor… and the weight crushed my sternum. I couldn’t breathe. Then Paul’s “discussion” with the Father in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 soaked me. It’s not me. It can’t be me. I have nothing, therefore I have everything. I inhaled this scripture and exhaled my Savior.

  10. Anne, I think you said on Twitter you didn’t like the keyboard on the iPhone. Not sure when you had yours previously but the landscape keyboard is much easier to use. I’d also seen keyboard things you can attach to the iPhone. Here is a link to a review on it. http://technofriends.in/2009/09/23/qwerty-keyboard-adapter-for-apple-iphone-3gs/

  11. Hi Anne,

I know what you mean about not loving the iPhone. I have had one for 18 months, and don’t love it. I thought I was the only one. There are some things that are cool, but before this I had a Treo, and loved it. Only reason I switched was because my Treo died. When my contract is up, I will be switching to something else. For it being a Apple product and “so cutting edge”, I find some basic things that it is missing or Apple won’t allow very irritating. (i.e. “Flash”)

Will be praying for you on your trip to Haiti.

  12. The setup: I pride myself on listening to obscure artists like Ulrich Schnauss, Waiting for a Nuclear Free City, Ladyhawke, Sigur Ros. I know my weird music. I’ll admit it. I’m a music snob.

My wife listens to top 40. And soft rock. And, cough cough, that pop Christian music stuff.

The hook: After years of marriage, I learned a fascinating fact. My wife had never been to a big time concert. I told her I would take her the next time a “who’s who” artist rolled through Atlanta.

The confession: We went to Britney Spears. Yep. Me against the music.

  15. mine tasted like don miller. wait… that didn’t come out right.

i’ve been anti “the don” since i heard him speak at catalyst back in ’06. he was rambly. and awkward. and seemed to say nothing of relevance. i just wasn’t a fan.

and the entire christian world was.

which actually made me even less of a fan. i have multiple copies of his books (back home in africa) because everyone and their mom kept giving me them. “you NEED to read this. don miller is amazing!” which just made me want to NOT read him all the more.

    so i never did.

i’ve never read any of his books.

even though they’ve changed everyone’s lives. and, apparently, he’s “amazing”.

but then he came to atlanta and spoke at my church a couple months ago. for lack of something better to do, i decided i’d give him a second try.

    and he blew me away.

the don learned to speak. i’m serious. i can’t even tell you how much better he was than the first time i heard him. i’ve even got his “million miles” book on my to-read stack in my bedroom. haven’t read it yet, but i’m gonna.

i met him briefly after he spoke. just wanted to say hi and thank him for what he shared. i even threw in a “i was pleasantly surprised by you tonight”. i was nice, though, and didn’t say why.

and i didn’t tell him that he reminded me of pie.

    of the humble variety.

  18. You ARE a sellout.

And I eat that pie nearly everyday.

Btw, I can relate to Alece – I was a big Don Miller skeptic until I finally read something by him (had to be efficient and listen to Blue Like Jazz while on a road trip – I’ve been a fan ever since). Actually, blogged about how that pie tasted recently.

Frankly, this tastes like crap, but it’s the best way to stay humble.

  19. I’d rather have a Nexus One. ;)

BTW if you’re coming to Moldova, it would be beyond awesome if you could stop by for a little in Budapest. If you can squeeze that into your schedule. No probs if it’s not possible. :)

  21. I got an email from my boss yesterday that said “Can we talk?” And that’s all it said. Soooo, I’m pretty sure I’ll be eating humble pie in aboooout an hour.

If I HAD an iPhone, I would totally download an app for this. But I don’t. I have a skinny black i don’t know what it’s called that I bought refurbished online for $60. But it has a camera. So I can take pictures of people in really bad outfits. Which I do sometimes. So, I guess I have nothing to complain about in the phone department. Now if only I knew what my boss wants to talk about… *gulp*

  24. I minister to women who struggle with eating disorders every day, leading them in worship and reminding them to not hold on to the things that want to destroy us…all the while holding bitterness towards a previous church due to some wounds. I met with the people involved and repented to them verbally. I didn’t have to own how things happened, but I had to own my pride and bitterness.

I feel better now encouraging these ladies to let go of some things.

  26. I swore I wouldn’t either. I swore I wouldn’t do that stupid Facebook thing. I swore I wouldn’t EVER get into that Twitter thing with all those self-important people.

Got the IPhone last May. Did the Facebook thing about the same time. And I signed in on Twitter to get my beloved Baylor Bears signing day up to the SECOND news on which high school kids signed up to be Baylor Bears. I did that this past Wednesday.

I am about full of crow. Anybody else want some of this stuff?

  27. International service is a total rip-off. Don’t pay for that. The best thing you can do is get your iphone unlocked (I guarantee someone will be able to do it in Haiti for about $5, although of course this voids the warranty), get a local SIM card, and SMS home your new number. It is SO much less expensive and such a better use of resources. The dirty secret AT&T won’t tell you is that you’ll be using the same local network anyway.

I try to stick to the flavors that I’m use to……. You know… .The ones that you know are not going to make you sick to your stomach.

Its all good though……..because I will eat my humble pie with songs of thanksgiving – YummyLicous!
