EDIT:
Because of some of the questions raised in the comments, I thought I’d clarify a few things.
I am going with a respected organization that has been on the ground in many countries, including on the island of Hispaniola prior to the earthquake, for many years.
This organization has a track record of responding holistically to crises like this.
There is a strategy and there are specific things we will be doing that are needed, otherwise we would not have been invited.
There is intention behind each person who is going on this trip at the time we are going.
I will share more details next week as we finalize the trip.
Thanks.
———
A couple of days ago, I was driving somewhere and thinking about Haiti.
It may have been around the same time they released the “estimated 200,000 dead” statistic because I remember thinking how impossible it would be to imagine what 200,000 dead actually looks like in person. And my mind just couldn’t go there.
One reason is because I’ve never quite seen a real dead body before. I did see my aunt in her casket at her funeral but that doesn’t really count. Every other funeral I’ve attended has been closed-casket or the body had been cremated.
I saw a picture of a mass grave in Haiti (it’s graphic but it’s here if you choose to click it) that gave me a taste of what 50 bodies looked like. I sat and stared at it for a good five minutes with tears rolling down my face.
And as I was staring at this picture I simply felt the nudge:
Go.
I laughed a little bit because surely God knows that February is really busy and I have to raise $5000 for my Ride:Well trip and he knows I’ve never slept anywhere but my bed or a bed in a hotel room and my sense of smell is really overactive so there’s no way I could possibly handle what Haiti must smell like, and oh yeah, did you see all the pictures of random people with guns?
That’s funny. Real funny.
Go.
Maybe God meant “go to Starbucks to get a skinny latte.”
A couple of hours later, I got an email from a friend of mine who asked me if I’d like to go to Haiti with his organization in a few weeks.
Without hesitation, I responded “100% yes.”
And so I’m going to Haiti.
I tweeted this yesterday, and it’s been interesting to see the variety of responses. Some people say they’re flat out jealous. They want to go to Haiti and please hear me when I say I understand your heart and your desire to help in such a desperate time. I really, really do.
But jealous?
Frankly, I have to say I would side with the other group of people that are saying, “I”m so glad it’s you going and not me.”
A week and a half ago I had no idea I’d be spending the last week of my 20′s (I turn 30 on February 19) in a country that wasn’t exactly safe to visit before the earthquake. And now I know I’m supposed to go and help and share with you what is happening and how, long term, Haiti is going to need our help.
Here’s the thing I want to leave you with:
I tend to believe that when fear, or comfort, or some other little obstacle pops in our head the correct response is to do the exact opposite.
Fear says, “Haiti is dangerous. You have to take those malaria pills that make your stomach hurt and what if there’s another earthquake while you’re there? What if you get shot at? ”
Comfort says, “You won’t have your choice of firm or soft pillows and it very well will smell like the rotting stench of death. You might be sleeping in a tent on the ground.”
Some people have said going to Haiti right now is like entering into a war zone. A war zone without any knowledge about what may or may not happen from one moment to the next. I am positive the moment my mother reads this post she will be calling me and likely ordering me to stay home.
I love you mom, but I’m sorry. I have to go.
You know what? I don’t have to go. I could email my friend and pull out right now.
A phrase my friend Jamie likes to use is “I get to.”
I get to go.
I don’t know what’s going to happen on this trip. I have no idea what to expect and I even asked the trip organizers to leave out most of the details except the things I simply need to know. Don’t tell me how we’re driving to Haiti or where we’ll sleep or what we’ll eat.
I don’t think I can fully process that yet.
I get to go. And I’m sticking with that.
The people of Haiti didn’t plan to have their lives interrupted (or ended) a week ago.
This is a whole new part of their story.
As I spoke to my friend a couple of days ago when we were working on some of the details, we realized Haiti is never going to be restored.
Haiti is going to be reborn.
We all get to be a part of that story – whether it’s by donating money or supplies or by taking a couple of Valium and getting on a plane.
I’m grateful that it’s not only Haiti’s story, and it’s not only yours and mine, either.
I’m grateful there’s a sovereign God who has a plan and purpose beyond anything we can imagine. And I’m grateful his breath is woven through each and every letter of each and every word of this new story as it is being written.
(To make sure you get my updates from Haiti, you can subscribe to my blog via RSS, get updates by email, or follow me on Twitter.)

Wow, Anne…I am overtaken by your willingness to step out in faith and follow, in a way, what God commands of us.
You have caused a stirring in me…
So, for that I thank you.
This story gave me chills…especially how you knew to go before the opportunity even presented itself, so you could say yes with assurance it was the right thing. Wow. God has planned this as part of your story, and you can trust Him.
But you portrayed the mental journey well.

Anne, that’s just awesome! You described what you’ll see so well. Please have a safe travel and having the loving attitude you have not only takes the limits off what God can do in and through you and also understanding that our call is not to make everyone happy but have the perspective needed and accomplished in your life at such a time as this. We will be praying for you as you go.

Anne, you are such an inspiration. This blog was beautifully written. This sentence really jumped out at me “I tend to believe that when fear, or comfort, or some other little obstacle pops in our head the correct response is to do the exact opposite.” So true and so perfect for this situation and one I am facing now although it is nothing as intense as what you are facing. I will definitely be praying for you and reading your updates when you are there.
Anne, that’s awesome! Thanks for being obedient to the Holy Spirit. And thanks for loving God and the people of Haiti enough to go. I’ll be praying for you and look forward to your updates.

Congrats, I think.
I actually was talking with a friend last night and told him that I wanted to go to haiti to help, his response: “ohhh really, well there is a guy in our church leaving Monday he has room for you to go with him.”
That hit me like a ton of bricks. I was just telling him I wanted to go, I didn’t expect for an offer. I started to think through actually going, the terror, the fear, the horror, the brokenness, all of that kind of overwhelmed me to the point of telling my friend I had to go and I hung up the phone.
Glad you listened to God, but I am also glad that He provided a way.
I will be praying for you and the group that you are going with.
and I agree 100%, you get to go.
That picture was brutal. Thank you for sharing it.
I know you’ve spent a fair bit of time in very impoverished settings. It’ll be interesting to see how this experience will be the same, and different, from what you’ve seen before. I look forward to hearing what you see firsthand.
May God go before you with abundant grace to transform your heart and touch the hearts of the hurting.

Anne, We’ll be praying for your safe journey, cant wait to read your Tweets from Haiti and see how it changes you. Thank you for your perspective. I love it.
So glad you are going. We are waiting for pastor Johnny Green, he’s there now talking with teams on the ground and churches so when he gets back they will set up scedule of trips for teams to go help. Dean and I are hoping we can go mid February. For us, it’s hard to wait. I wish I was there now. But I’m glad the doctors and pastors from HPC are there now. We all have a part to play in this recovery and rebirth of Haiti. There is years worth of work there. God bless you for not letting fear stop you.
I have to say, I totally get the jealousy comments. Its probably a place-in-life thing more than a not-being-aware-of-the-risks thing.
You are blessed to have the opportunity, and you are making the most of it. I know God will meet you there.
What’s the correct response to this?
Congrats?
Have a great trip?
Enjoy?
Praying for you?
They seem odd and unfitting. I hope you can make a difference while you’re down there and after you come back. And I hope you come back safe & destroyed at the same time.

I am in tears. And I will be the person who says they are jealous. Not for the danger, the unknown, the brokenness, or the tragedy. But for the ability to .do. something. To hold a child, comfort a sobbing woman, or give sustenance to the physically and spiritually starving. For that opportunity, I am jealous with that holy jealousy. My prayers are with you that you will be the hands, feet, and face of Jesus to the nation of Haiti.

Thanks for your prayers & encouragement and willingness to go when you can, and give and pray when you can’t. We all are needed for this rebirth.

Ann,
I love your heart, but I have a question: What value will you add to the effort? What particular skills do you have to offer? From what I’ve heard from aid workers already there, what they need is people skilled especially in specialized health care. With already overcrowded air/sea ports, how will it effect legitimate aid efforts if all of us with soft hearts but no skills came pouring in the country?
Just asking.
It might be better to take the money you need to raise for the trip and donate it all to a medical relief effort already on the ground, or someone with hard skills like Compassion or Samaritan’s purse. Or for rebuilding efforts by organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
Just asking.
Dear Dave: How long have you been reading Anne’s blog? The reason I ask is because I have been reading it for a little over a year, and, the question(s) you put out there are easily answered by just reading thru blog. You shouldn’t have to ask for skill level….blog is evidence, enough. :-)
Just asking.
P.S. In the most respectful voice: Who are we to Question someone’s passion, calling… Careful, sensitive ground there. :-)
Reese?s last blog ..Prayer SOS
Reese,
I’ve lurked here for a while now. I know about Anne’s journeys. But – again from what I’ve heard on the ground – there are particular skill sets needed right now. There is confusion on the ground. And there are already many people on the ground helping. I’m just saying it *might* be worth stepping back and letting those who are particularly needed have the priority.

Gotcha.. but, I am sure the organization is not one of rudimentary stature….

Dave,
While you make a valid point, one that I would agree with in most situations, and in fact, what you wrote above is the reason why I’m not going. I would be in their way.
But….
If God called me to go, I would go. If God told Anne to go, she should go. If God called YOU to go… you should go… Get what I’m saying here?
exactly. I don’t want the nick name “Spirit Quencher” .

Dave – If you’re thinking, “God doesn’t talk to me the way he seems to talk to other people,” I just want you to know that you’re not alone.
I’m not weighing in one way or the other on the issue of whether it’s a good idea to go to Haiti. Just sticking up for Dave because sometimes, when I question a decision only to be told that “God wants it this way,” I feel either 1) irritated, because I wonder if people play the “God card” just to avoid responding to input/advice or 2) depressed, because I’m not sure why God doesn’t speak as clearly to me as he seems to speak to others.
Again, not choosing sides here. Just defending Dave from the accusation that his advice/opinion means he doesn’t take God seriously.

Excellent quote by Shaun King. Love that. I’ve heard from several friends on the ground in Haiti that they are being received well and able to make a difference in the lives of Haitians through the simple act of loving them and providing some tangible help (clothes, food, water).
Frankly, I’m a bit discouraged by some of the critical spirits expressed on this blog.
Let’s all try to trust Anne’s judgment a little bit more. As a mature and intelligent activist, she doesn’t seem like the type to just jump into something that isn’t well-thought.

Said a prayer for you while reading.
I have had several opportunities to travel to places off the beaten path (nothing like Haiti as it is right now) and fear has always been there (mainly fear to leave my kids for far off lands). I have purposed in my heart never to make a decision based on fear, to instead do the opposite as you said because my God commands me not to fear and he does not work through fear.
He will go before you – I’m thankful for your words, the awareness you will bring to the rest of us, and the heart you show through these blog posts.

Jealous isn’t really the right word–at least for me. “Longing” is a better word. Longing to be with the friends I made while in Haiti last summer. The village I worked in is hours away from PAP and their structures are barely affected. However, the pastors there have been driving back and forth and loading up people from PAP to bring back to their city for medical care, food, & water. The population has virtually doubled. It is a refugee camp. I very much understand the risks of going, but long to return to my friends and help them as they reach out to their new community.
Praying for you as you go. God bless Haiti.

One way we make certain we do something is by telling someone else. Well you have certainly done that. So just remember who has you back–God …and all of us who will be praying for you. and Happy 30th Birthday. This is the type of present that only God can give :)))
Atta girl. You strong woman you. Fear/Schmear. You have blogged that you practice your belief of ‘doing the opposite’ of what fear says. As a person ensnared by fear myself, I applaud you. I believe that you walk where angels fear to trod in blog-land, so, you can do it on shaky land! HE is your Rear Guard (Isa. 52:12). May HE guide your steps, plans, and hands.
I would actually like to go myself… but if I’m honest, it would be less to ‘help out’. I have no experience in rescue operations, and would probably just be in their way (although I would help if I was needed for something). I’m a better helper by donating to Compassion.
I’m a photographer, so in all honesty I would go mainly just to experience first hand what something of that magnitude ‘felt like’, and then try to convey the feeling with images…
It’s probably best I stay here in reality, the last thing they need is another tourist.
Actually, sometimes they need photographers to keep getting the word out. You know that most of the US population (myself included if I don’t work at it) will forget about Haiti within the next 3-4 weeks unless some other big disaster happens. Photographs can make people feel when they’d rather go numb (see the photo Anne linked to). I’ve heard of at least one group that covers these kinds of things to help raise money and awareness, it’s called Americares, I haven’t researched it at all, just saw one of the photographers on CNN or something. Maybe God is calling you too…

Anne,
I’m thankful for the willing obedience of many who are going over now and will go in the future to serve and love on a group of people in such dispair. I confess my heart has been cold to this situation and my prayer has been that God would soften my heart…melt it like wax. I like you usually am extremely affected by such things. Though it’s a dangerous prayer, I’m glad the Lord is beginning to answer.

And that’s for Haiti, too.
I am so proud of you?but I know it isn’t about pride. It is about obedience and that is contagious. I am continuing to pray how God may use me in the lives of the Haitian people. I know I too have a mission. For now, it is to support.

Crystal,
thank you – and amen! As one who gets the same impression of 2010… and is preparing for something wild and new, we need to hear the voice of those willing to encourage.
and Anne, I’ve got your back; my family will be praying for you… Our community is DOING NOTHING to help, the comments I’m hearing make me so sad…
As someone who has served a community after a disaster I would like to speak to the question of what non medical, rescue workers can do to help and why we MUST go. Now and in the coming weeks trash will start to pile up, elderly and injured people will need diapers changed, need to be washed, comforted, fed, etc. Lines organized, people waiting for food comforted and calmed, etc. Relief workers and medical staff will need every minute to do what they do so people Need to be there to do all the other suff. The most unglamorous stuff. All that go should be self Sufient, not putting a burden on the economy in any way but only there to serve the people of Haiti however that looks. All the organizations planning trips now are currently in the process of finding put from churches and groups on the ground what is needed there and what the people that go will be doing. I know that after Katrina we picked up trash at the airport while doctors worked on patients, we lifted people from wheel chairs, helped them carry their belongings. Bottom line is to go to serve. Anne also has the unique platform of thousands of readers to this blog so het voice will keep this issue forfront long after helping Haiti is on the news all the time. She can and will inspire and encourage people to help.
love this, carole! appreciate your “expertise” in being a necessary non-expert in a time of crisis. :)

Hi Anne.
My mom is there right now. I almost got to go too (I was even in Miami!) but then I got hosed. Or so my husband says. I think because I’m a white, skinny girl. The men got to go (darn men).
Just wanted to offer some practical advise – take or leave – no prob. I’ve lived in Haiti and never took malaria medicine. I work for a doctor (who is also there now) and he recommends typhoid but not necessarily chloroquine (sp?).
Don’t take the yucky malaria pills that make you barf randomly every day. Just wear DEET bugspray. It was my fav – “Parfum de bug spray.”
Mmmm.
Lisa
P.S. You’ll do great.
Lisa – In India, I took mefloquine (for malaria prevention), and one day I noticed that one of the side effects listed on the side of the box was “homicidal rage.” Fortunately I managed to get home without killing anyone! :-)

I am so moved by your willingness to travel to Haiti especially at this time.
My heart aches for the people. I wonder what more can I do from where I am. I want to go to Haiti but not sure how to go about traveling to help.
This I know – I pray to move there in the future and be a part of the rebuilding process. I like how you said ‘it’s going to be reborn’. The country needs it badly.
I know because I was raised there.
I will definitely keep you in my prayers Anne.
Please take a minute to read this article, “Disaster do-gooders can actually hinder help.” (I can’t believe I’m promoting something from MSNBC, but truth is truth!)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34958965/ns/world_news-haiti_earthquake/
We have people in-country and we’re sending more down, but it’s a very difficult situation down there right now. I know the title of the article sounds discouraging, but don’t take it that way. Take it as some tips of “what not to do” as you go — then go in the peace, grace and direction of the Lord.
Someone I follow on twitter linked to this post… that’s why I am reading this.
I find your entire view on this trip a bit disturbing. Do you have ANY idea how many aid/government/military workers are in Haiti right now? I can’t help but wonder if more Americans going is just adding to the chaos. If you do not have experience in relief work, medical experience..etc., it would seem that you are going more for YOU, than to help people.
Why not support those who have skills that are actually going to be able to help? Is God calling you to go, or are you selfishly seeking adventure, attention to your blog, making yourself feel “good” because you sacrificed to go to Haiti?
Maybe I’m completely wrong. I just disagree on so many levels with people going just to go.
Katie, You don’t know our girl!!— You just happened to click on a link to get here, right? … Invest some time in her blog, before you ask presumptious questions… Actually, if you scroll up 11/12 replies, you will see a beautiful reply outlining what will soon be needed, for the Re-Birth of Haiti, by Carole Turner.
I do agree ..People should not go just to “Go.”…but, that’s not the case, here.
Read Up, and stick around…. Anne’s Cool.
Reese?s last blog ..Prayer SOS
Reese, I agree with Katie. I’ve been reading Anne’s blog for years, and I think I know her heart. I don’t believe she’s doing this out of selfishness- she’s very giving.
But right now just doesn’t seem to be the best time to go, and I cringed reading her first reason: “One reason is because I?ve never quite seen a real dead body before.” Go to the morgue. Go to the hospital. Dead people are everywhere. That sounds harsh, but it’s true.
I’ve got more thoughts, and I’ll post them later on my blog (so I’m not taking up more space here). All I know is that, after Katrina in New Orleans, we didn’t need more unskilled people who wanted to see things. We needed skilled medical personnel, engineers, and so on.
Go to Haiti. I want to go, and I may have an invitation. But don’t do it now. Recovery comes after the trauma. We’re not trained for trauma, but for recovery. Wait until this summer when the immediate need for relief has subsided and we can be more helpful in the cleanup and rebuilding.
That’s just how I feel about it.
Joe Kennedy?s last blog ..[Project 365 Week 2]
Hi Joe! .. You might want to re-read the 1st couple paragraphs; it is then that you might understand the real reason behind this statement: ?One reason is because I?ve never quite seen a real dead body before” ..
sorry to everyone else; I am sure you are getting tired of seeing my name—I will try not to post anymore. :-) This is just a very emotional subject… and, I am very overprotective of A.) PK’s, in general and, B.) anyone who is responding to a nudging of the Holy Spirit…
O.K, I’m Done.
Oops, I find myself repeating myself here… but it is necessary. And I do believe that Katrina was a drastically different situation.
We have connections with some of the small missions and ngo’s on the ground now, and their “small” efforts are making an immediate impact. Here’s one perspective. http://tinyurl.com/y9o7uce
Thanks, I’m sorry you’re disturbed. I’ve been invited by a missions organization that is providing relief and am trained professionally in providing counseling in traumatic situations.
I’m sad that you would make these assumptions, among others that we aren’t supporting efforts that are there.
Please have faith in the organization that has invited this team to do what we have been asked to do. They didn’t ask because there wasn’t a need, they asked because there is, and they asked a certain group of people to go because of the skills we do possess.
Please know that you go with all of our prayers behind you!

Praying for you and your trip.

Anne, we’re sure your organization knows what it’s doing and what is needed, and we’ve read you enough to trust that you did sense God’s direction, so go with God’s blessing. And it shouldn’t affect RideWell, but if it does, there’ll always be next year. And know that our whole family will be praying for you while you’re gone.
BTW, Yvette says to tell you she was 30 earlier this week (also on the 19th), and she survived it! And Bill, her brother, (who’s 19 months younger than you), tells her she still has a lot more b’days left. So have a happy birthday next month. If you’re still serving in Haiti then, perhaps you can think of it as God’s present to you – the opportunity to give and love and grow even more.
It would be amazing what God would call each one of us to do if we would only sit still long enough to listen to Him …

I love this. That unavoidable ‘GO’. And I love the concept of doing the exact opposite of whatever fear or objection comes to mind. That’s very true in so many situations. Looking forward to hearing what all you encounter in Haiti!
Anne,
I’m not going to read the 100+ before me, so if I repeat a thought someone else has had which you have responded to, my apologies.
First off, grace and peace and safety to you on your journey. May you transfer all three to those in need in Haiti.
I think the word “jealous” might be a bit of a misnomer. Rather, I think it is a real and true desire to see or be a part of the physical manifestation of God’s healing in the world. It’s a total human mind-set, of course. We want to be “in on the action,” often for our own sense healing as well as those who need to be healed. Sending $50+ to the IRC or Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders, while a giving and honorable gesture, still leaves us wanting to do “more,” and what “more” could there be than getting down into the heart of the hurting, and offering our assistance in mind, body and spirit.
We want to be like a rich man in the middle ages known as Bernard di Quintavalle- he owned land in and around Assisi, and often had St. Francis over for dinner to ask him questions in the early stages of Francis’ ministry. Bernard gave money to Francis to help out, but eventually sold all his land and donned the brown habit to become brother Bernard.
Giving money to help is one thing. Sweating and healing and walking and talking with the hurting is another.
Thus, “jealous.” But kinda righteously jealous. The desire is there. And as one famous monk once said “The desire to pray is the beginning of prayer.”
So go. Be a prayer in action for us. Be the living desire of our hearts. Hurt, ache, heal, feel, give, question, get frustrated, cry, help, wash, bathe, feed, and do everything we want to do. The school I teach at in Florida, which has a large Haitian population, is gathering food to send down there. Let me picture you opening a can of food and serving it. From our school to your arms to the waiting hands of Christ..

Thanks everyone for the support. I will say the organization I am going with has been providing aid on the ground since before the earthquake and is partnered closely with many churches. They know the skills I have that may or may not be evident by reading a blog or a tweet. I am confident in mine and my husband’s decision, the unmistakable conversation with my Creator, and the organization’s knowledge of who I am and what my gifting and skills are to know that I am needed at this time, and this is the time I get to go and serve.
I will be sharing more later about the details.
Thank you.
Thanks for this post, Anne, and your honesty. Definitely praying for you during this time, and excited for you to give your voice to Haiti.

Anne,
SO awesome that you’re being obedient to God’s prompting and walking in FAITH! It’s easy for people to question why you’re going when there are so many “experts” there right now and to question, what help would you be? It’s a valid point, but at the end of the day, if God called you to it, then you don’t have to do question anything and just say “yes” which you are doing.
Maybe you’re called there so you can save ONE person’s life whom, if you didn’t go and weren’t at the right place at the right time, would die. Maybe you’re called there to help thousands of people. Maybe you’re called there because you have a huge following and sharing your experience through your social channels will inspire others to help in their own ways. WHO knows? Only our Creator does.
The most important thing is, you’ve been called there and you said YES!
As for me, I’m planning on staying here and organizing a concert/dinner for Haiti. Then if God makes a way, actually going in a few months time (when a lot of people will have almost forgotten about Haiti).
Looking forward to following your posts!
Reggie
Anne,
Never commented on your blog before, but thought this worth mentioning. I love the dialogue you allow, and that you don’t delete comments from people who disagree with you.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. :)
Most blogs I read block people who leave negative comments… way to go for allowing the dialogue, even thought it’s hard to hear unsolicited criticism.
Good for you Anne. Praying for you.
Anne,
I am happy to hear that you are going. I have sent money and my church family has sent some money. We intend to continue our annual support of Haiti. However, I would hope that you would not simply go, spectate, and cry. The people need help, not pity. God’s speed.

I can understand people being jealous. Most of us want to go, but can’t without quitting our jobs, which is outside of most peoples’ ability. I hope you have a great time and God shows you lots of amazing things. I think you are right – Haiti will be reborn in an unimaginable way.
Proud of you, Anne. Been praying about what to do, how to respond (in addition to giving…) Haven’t felt the nudge yet, but will say YES if He does. God doesn’t call us to pretty and comfort, but He does call us to bring Him glory… and you’ll be doing just that. I’ll be praying for your trip.

Hi Anne
Whilst I love reading your blogs, I have to question your proposed visit to Haiti at this stage.
This does not seem a time for a mission trip unless you have practical skills and experience to help these people.
Please, hear me. DOXYCYCLINE!!! I retd, from living in an African village for 4 days, over 3 weeks ago. I got bug bites. What kind?? Don’t know. But I took 100 mg of Doxy a day, and am still taking it. No symptoms of Malaria. A yeast infection is a small price to pay compared to the horrendous side effects of the other meds. If you get any malaria symptoms, let me know and I’ll happily overnight you my Mephaquin!!
My Dad told me not to go to Africa. I went anyway. I’m SOOOO glad I did. And he’s ok with it now. :) But there’s some things about that trip that I’ll probably NEVER share with him. B/c I don’t want him to have a heart attack when I tell him I’m going back. ;)
Praying for you and your Mom!
One more thing. Vick’s Vapor Rub under each nostrile. :)
Love it.
Go in peace.
Will be praying:) Keep us posted.
Yes Anne. Whatever you do , do not take advice of just using Deet. Malarone has few side affects but take care with the water. I have been ill in S America more times from water than any other reason. If/when you refil bottles with mineral water, make sure your bottle is thoroughly cleaned with alcohol if possible. The little boy in Indian is used to that water but you are not! I could go on but whatever your reason for the trip … I will be praying for you
For those of you who say you want to go I have a suggestion. Go to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Louisiana/Gulf Coast, China…..These places have all had similar disasters over the last five years and are still in desperate need for help but are being forgotten because the initial emergency is over. They are past the point of needing just the medical teams and emergency/disaster teams. They need hands, hearts, and love.
Also, there is a lot to do here in the States to support agencies that are sending (I have been manning phones this week), to prepare for refugees and orphans, to encourage agencies that will come in during round 2, 3, 18, and 50. There are materials to be prepared, supplies to be gathered, research to be done. What Haiti and much of the developing world needs is our knowledge and skills in how to rebuild stronger and healthier societies. Also, please be prepared and in prayer for those returning from Haiti and the victims in regards to the emotional and psychological impacts. The trauma can have long lasting effects, and while it can bring some closer to God, it can also cause tremendous doubt, confusion, and disillusionment. The aftercare for those coming out of trauma is still a newer field where little work has been done and the needs are huge. Those who are returning will need support, outlets, and places to share real and raw emotions without judgment or filtering.
Anne, if this is the time for you to go, then the Lord be with you and those on your team. May you be a heart and a voice for redemption, hope, and a light that shines the Lord in ways he couldn’t do through someone else.

May God use you to bring his Word to everyone you come in contact with. May his Glory shine thru you and give the Haiti people hope. I will pray for you…may he protect you…guide you…and use you in a might way.

Anne,
If you were just going as a tourist – all on your own – I would say ‘Don’t go.’ At least not yet. But if you have been invited then they must believe that you will be of help and be able to serve others in the name of Jesus. Go. And be his hands and feet to the thousands of people in Haiti who need hope and help. I can’t wait to hear the stories of how God touches the lives of people through you.
Thank you Joe.

Have not commented in a long time – This is wonderful that you ‘get to go’! I will include you in my prayers and know that through the hard things you will encounter the blessings will be far greater. We have a saying at our church – ATAPAT-
Any Time Any Place Any Where – just as you haveon your other trips and are doing for Haiti. You ROCK!! God Bless You!!!
Where I live, when people leave you or are about to go on a journey, they say “Go well”. It means so much more then just “be well” or “be safe”. It means that they are with you. That God is with you. That you are not alone. That you are protected and that the person saying it is sending their blessing. So….Go well Anne. I am praying for you and for you to be completely in God’s will every step of the way.

Come on! There was no doubt when I read the post that Anne was going with an organization that was going to be doing meaningful work. I am sure she gets offers to do things/go places all the time that she considers and then declines. I never thought she was going on a vacation or just going to hang out with a friend!
Just because she didn’t give details, doesn’t mean that her decision wasn’t thought through, prayed through.
It’s been interesting to see on several blogs that the community of faith is getting divided over who’s going where to do what. What a ploy of the enemy to distract and divide.
Let’s put our energy into prayer for those who are going … and even more so, for the precious people who call Haiti their home.

Hi Anne,
I don’t comment a lot, but have been reading your blog for a long time.
I’ve been loving your posts lately!
You inspire me to DO things, so thank you.
I’m glad you’re obedient to God in going to Haiti, I’ll be praying.
Anna.
Anne, I want to apologize for my words. They were spiteful and uncalled for. Honestly, who I am to question what our Lord is calling you to do. It’s easy for me to jump to conclusions about people and circumstances. You are right, I have no idea the specific needs of the organization you will be going with, so I should not have said anything. Again, my sincerest apology for me questioning your heart and motives I will be praying specifically for you as you travel.
Thanks Katie. Your apology means the world to me and I really appreciate it more than you could possibly know. Most importantly, thanks for your prayers and please keep us all (even the teams there now with this organization) in your prayers as they are serving close to the border, where there has been some recent violence. They are safe, and distributing supplies, but because of the turmoil between the DR/Haiti, there have been some very horrific incidents.
The beauty of watching the people of the Body of Christ, the ones who love Him and know His love, stand with and for a wounded, person, people, or nation is knowing…
that they know… that the only solution we have (that is different from any other organization there) is Christ.
And that our one responsibility is to keep bringing ourselves back to Christ, to be a person under his authority, carrying what we receive from Him to give it to another wounded person, one life at a time.
And that we can do nothing, remarkable, apart from Him or apart from the other members of the body.
Today, Haiti needs people on the ground skilled to respond to immediate rescue, medical, crisis management needs right now. And then there will be a new skill set needed for organization, and rebuilding, and coping with loss, and then the ministers will need to be ministered to…
My prayer is that each of us will remain available to fully participate, as we are equipped, whether we’re being seen, heard, read or acknowledged. The work for Haiti has just begun.
Isaiah 6:8 (New International Version)
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
’nuff said.
I will most certainly keep those specific requests in my prayers. Honestly, I feel horrible for any hurt I my words may have caused, God really, really convicted my heart and I will be checking your blog regularly for more updates about you trip.
Thanks Katie. And no worries. I am growing through this process too! :)
Heart change here … heart change there …

Anne,
For what it’s worth, I have full confidence in your trip. I will be praying for you and the rest of the team you go with and for the work you will be doing. Praise God for such an opportunity to help!
Switching to a more practical (and slightly gross) side: take whatever malaria meds the doctor recommends for the area. Some are ineffective in different regions and with the breakdown of Haiti you’ll want to be doubly careful to not get sick. About the body stench- it sticks to everything and is very hard to get out of your nose and off whatever clothes you bring. You might want to consider planning to leave as much as possible of what you bring there.
Maybe this whole thing will be a wake-up call for us and Haiti will finally get the stability she so desperately needed, even before the earthquake.
in light of His nudge and some of the comments above:
Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” ~ John 21:20-22 (TNIV)
blessings…

Go! Isaih 6:8 reminds us that God will send those who are available before he sends those who are skilled. My wife leaves f/Haiti Feb 15th – my heart breaks for Haiti; but it also breaks for the kids in DC who share the same life style (only without the crushing rubble). Am I worried about my wife? You bet – when she returns will I be equipped to handle what God has done in her life emotionally and spiritually? That’s my greatest concern -her safety is his concern. Go!

Dearest Anne,
I am so glad you are going. The physical needs are certainly great. But the emotional trauma is at least equally intense. You are a person who understands that…who knows how to listen to the hurting and speak life. I don’t think you can even imagine yet what God will do through you.
I am also glad you are going because you are one of favorite story-tellers. You will take us with you and help us see…and hear. Thank you for that.

Thank you for going to Haiti. I just turned 29 and I am a missionary in what has been deemed the most dangerous city in the world right now. I live in El Paso, TX and I serve in Juarez, MX with an organization called Casas por Cristo. I’m a GA girl through and through but God called me here 6 years ago and it’s become my life.
Despite the drug wars and violence that have made Juarez known across the globe, there is a very different story happening. It is one of families in extreme poverty that need our help. Kids still go to school, parents walk to work, life goes on as normal. Yet CNN and every other news station have categorized it more dangerous than Afghanistan and the murder capital of the world. This may be the case, but what we see happening is that people are still in desperate need of help but the world is too afraid to come. We cross that border daily and have never had any problems. We’ve been serving this city for 17 years.
As someone that works in a place daily that the world is afraid to go to I want to say thank you. Thank you for listening to God, and thank you for going to meet their desperate need rather than waiting on someone else to go. I know your life will be changed because of it, although you will surely return more broken too. I am seeking my own opportunities to serve in Haiti in the upcoming weeks and pray that God will lead me as well to exactly where He wants me to be used. I’m excited to hear how God changes your life as you serve.
Thanks for doing what you do. I’ve read a lot about Juarez and the “Bloody Sunday” a few years ago…I appreciate your boldness.
Anne – heard great things about your blog from Matt Snyder, great things about you from AIM! I’m on staff as well there and so excited you’re going!
I noticed your comment about the malaria meds that ‘hurt your stomach’. Just wanted to give you a heads up that there are 3 types of malaria meds. Sorry that I don’t know the names, but I do know this: One can cause hallucinations/night terrors, the second makes you sun-sensitive (a big NO for going to Haiti), the third has no bad side-effects that I’ve heard of but is much more expensive than the other 2. I would encourage you to discuss your options with your doctor and see if he can explain the 3 meds to you and write you a script for the 3rd. I’m sure some supporters would be glad to help cover the cost – no need to be in pain/suffering bad side effects when you could choose another med!
Hope that helps – just a little something I learned from my time overseas. BLESSINGS as you go!
Thanks…I’ve been on 2 (the doxy-sun and Malarone-expensive) and both tore me up. Lariam (crazy) is not an option for me. There is another one I got that is a once a week one that is recommended for Haiti, so at least I can take it this week to see if it jacks with me and it was cheap. Cholorquine. I think. Thanks for the love!
Hey my names Sarah. My youth pastor Tim is going with you to Haiti and i just wanted you to know that Im praying for all of you and praying that God will use you all in a big way! God Bless!
my mom found out about my going from my brother who found out from facebook and such. and she also strongly dissented (’cause at almost 27 years of age at the time, i’m a little too old to be ordered, i guess), bringing up a host of other issues to be worked out and such, that i have yet to address, even though i’ve been back for almost a week now.
all that to say that i can relate to the mom-stacle.
