Staff Development Day
July 21, 2006  |  Church, Leadership

Today, we had “Staff Development Day” for support services (communication, IT & facilities are under that umbrella). I’m sure we could have sat around watching videos on how to be more effective, shared our goals & dreams with each other and prayed for the future, but we did something much more spiritual and bonding than that.

We played Laser Tag.

I have never played laser tag before, even after working with students for several years. I love guns (I did grow up in Texas), and I am slightly competitive (Ok, I’m ridiculously competitive) so once I got the lay of the 10,000 sq foot, 2 story arena – I found my focus zooming in and 20 minutes later was sweating harder than any time I’ve excersized in the last week. The 17 or so of us waited for the results. Chris came in first place (he is laser killing fool!) followed by Tony (our web director) and Shane (my laser-tag arch nemisis). I was surprised I came in 4th!

The next game was a team game and sadly, communication lost by a hair. I did kill Shane more than he killed me, so personally, my goal was satisfied. Shane & I had been trash talking back and forth the last couple of weeks so at least I can claim some sort of victory on him, even though his team won.

Tonight, Chris & I are going to Dave & Busters to celebrate with our new friends Kevin & Ann who just moved here right after we did from Illinois. Kevin is turning 27, and I’m sure we’ll be playing a bunch more games there.

So, it’s a great way to start off the weekend. Playing games. I feel like a little kid again.

Question for the weekend:

What’s one of your favorite games to play? Are you competitive?

Have a good one…

  1. The family: Andy Griffeth trivia game.
Cranium: incorporates a lot of interests and learning styles so that everyone can feel confident playing.
Xpress Yourself is fun in a diverse group. Just figuring out the thingy that holds the cards cracks us up. (But you have to be able to hear it read to you).

  2. balderdash.
I will kick your face in.
    Los

  3. Just went to Dave & Buster’s for the first time last week with Amy…I had no idea…fun place! No, I didn’t play video games but still had a great time. Food and drinks there rock! Gotto take the fam.

  6. What a great idea. I have been trying to decide what to do with my staff for a development day. I’m tired of meeting and sitting and watching a video. We are offically going to play some laser tag.

  7. Anne's Nemesis (shane)

    *scratches head*
So… many… games… to choose! I have to admit that I do get tired of card games and board (bored) games. I can handle those fine as long as there is a good crowd with me and an ample supply of java. I LOVE computer games, prefer mutiplayer team games, but really any game on the computer is great!

Laser Tag is da BomB. I was really expecting a let down when we first played but it was a blast.

Q2… Competitive???? Um… does a fat dog fart? Heck YA I’m Competitive!!! But there is a time and a place for it. It has taken me a long time to figure that one out and let go of some of my competitive nature. Bowling I talk trash but i’m not really competitve b/c i’m HORRIBLE. But more than anything I’m competitive with myself. I set up my own goals and will not stop until they are accomplished.

  8. LAZER TAG! That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout.

That’s MY kind of staff development.

  9. My favorite game right now is Settlers of Catan. It rocks! And I’m quite competitive, but I’ve learned that it’s okay to lose.

  10. love to play trivia type games, like Scene it … i’m not hugely competitive, but i have my moments. ;-)

  11. That is stinking awesome. I would love to do that for staff development. On a side note, you have been added to the blog roll my friend.

  12. I love Balderdash!!! I can make crud up like you wouldn’t believe. I also love MadGab. I realize I going to very politically incorrect here, but, if you play that game and talk like you’re retarded, you can do very well.
